Ketogenic Diet
As the name suggests, the ketogenic diet, or keto, helps you lose weight by getting the body into a state of ketosis: a metabolic process, in which the fat stores in the bloodstream are converted into energy molecules (ketones). This is achieved by increasing one’s fat intake at the expense of the carbohydrates they consume.
In its essence, the ketogenic diet is a high-fat, moderate-protein and very low-carb diet. This means you can enjoy as much bacon, avocado, coconut oil, and cheese as you want (and fits your daily intake), but you need to forego pasta, bread and other carbohydrates.
Going into ketosis takes a bit of a commitment. Especially in the beginning, you may be experiencing hunger and cravings but the results are absolutely worth it.
Intermittent Fasting (IF)
During an intermittent fasting program, the individual will fast for an interval of time, usually no more than 48hrs, and then eat normally for the remaining period of time per week. The most common example of this is known as the “5:2” diet, where calories are severely restricted for 2 days (preferably non-consecutive), and then normal eating occurs for the other 5 days in the week.
Other intermittent fasting programs include complete fasts where no food is consumed for a specific length of time (commonly 16-24 hours), also non-consecutive days per week.
