The Keto Diet: Everything You Need to Know
It can be downright challenging to keep up with new dieting fads, recommendations, and organized planning today. As you have probably heard in the news or on TV, the “keto diet” is something hot and popular among individuals looking to shed weight. We’re going to go over a breakdown of the keto diet, how it works, and everything you need to know to make this kind of dieting lifestyle work for you in 2019.
What is Keto?
Low carb, moderate protein, and high-fat. That’s the macronutrient formula the keto diet uses to achieve the goal of getting your body into the metabolic state of ketosis, where it burns fat instead of carbs for energy. By consuming less carbs, it’s easier for the body to access and burn its fat stores, making it a very effective method for quick weight loss and fat reduction.
With the Keto Diet, when and how much you eat is less important than sticking to the low carb/high-fat formula. Due to unpleasant side effects like the keto flu—a feeling of sickness and fatigue when entering ketosis—many often quit before seeing any benefits. And because most health experts do not recommend the keto diet for the long-term diet (beyond 90 days), a high percentage of people tend to regain much of the weight they lost once they return to eating carbs.
How Does the Keto Diet Work?
Keto can be practiced in one of four ways:
- Standard Keto Diet: This is broken down into 75% fat, 20% protein, and only 5% carbs on a daily basis.
- Cyclical Keto Diet: This version follows a pattern cycle, with 5 completely ketogenic days, followed by 2 high-carb days.
- Workout Keto Diet: This version allows you to add carbs around intensive workouts.
- High Protein Keto Diet: This ratio looks like 60% fat, 35% protein, and 5% carbs.
You are probably thinking: sounds relatively doable, but life without carbs can get taxing, right?
